From The PresidentIt's hard to believe that it has been almost a year since we lost Pauline Israels. Her presence in our Sanctuary is greatly missed. Pauline often told us that when she and her infant son Lou escaped the Nazis, she made a promise to herself to attend services each Shabbat. She steadfastly kept that vow until her health finally failed her in her nineties. She set an example for all of us by the graceful and dignified manner in which she lived her life and by her regular participation and support of our Congregation. Several years ago she established the Richard & Pauline Israels Scholarship to assist the youth of CBS attending college. Now her estate has made a generous contribution to our Campership Fund that will provide scholarships for up to 50% of the cost for children of the congregation to attend Jewish summer camps until the funds are exhausted. The generosity of Pauline and her family will make it possible for youngsters growing up in Modesto, where they might be the only Jewish student in their class or even their entire school, to enjoy a magical summer in a camp community where everyone shares their faith. These spirited camp adventures create friendships and memories that can last a lifetime and more importantly a bond to Judaism they would likely never acquire in Modesto. Pauline's involvement and generosity set an example for us while she was alive. Her generous bequest sets another exemplary example for us. When the time comes to plan your estate, please follow Pauline's example and remember our Congregation. We often speak of CBS as our second family. The blunt reality is that the dues we collect are inadequate to support our current budgetary needs. Planned giving is an important way to guarantee the future existence of our community. Please contact Liz Trauring (Treasurer, Finance Committee) or myself for additional advice on how to include CBS in your estate planning. B'shalom -- Dan BrotslawReligious School NewsAl regel Achat.... We had a wonderful month in our religious school. We continued in our regular curriculum of Hebrew, Israel studies, and prayer. Our pre-confirmation and confirmation students began their Holocaust studies unit and are having a very educational experience. Our students and teachers participated in a very emotional commemoration service for Kristalnacht--the night of broken glass; we were all so privileged to have two of our own congregants present in the service that told us about their experiences in this horrific night. Thank you so much for speaking to us! We are looking forward to Chanukah when our school will celebrate our freedom to practice our religion and the miracle of Chanukah. We will have few stations with different Chanukah activities during Sunday school Dec. 5th and at the end of the day; we will indulge on some traditional, homemade latkes! December also brings with it the winter break we are all looking for so eagerly. I will be spending my winter break in Israel visiting my family and friends. It has been two and a half years since I have seen my family. This visit will be special for me as in this visit, I am not the only one bringing love and regards to Israel and the Israeli people, but as the educator in this great Religious school, I will be bringing with me warm regards and love from our students and congregants that care and support our homeland Israel so much! It is truly a pleasure to be representing you! I would like to wish all of you a wonderful, happy Chanukah, and may this holiday season bring many blessings to you and your family B"H. -- Nir D. "Get Well" Information NeededIf you know of a congregant who is ill or in the hospital, please help us include them for calls, visits, and the speedy recovery list by letting the office staff know. Please remember that hospitals are not permitted to share information with the public, including the synagogue. Inkjet Cartridge RecyclingBring in your used, empty printer cartridges and CBS will earn approximately $3.00 each. This is an easy way to help support CBS. Just place them in the green box under the table in the foyer. Scrip NewsWe no longer carry Starbucks scrip. Safeway and Macy'sIf you shop at Safeway or Macy's, we ask that you consider registering your store cards with eScrip. Every time you make a purchase, you generate a percentage for CBS. SaveMart & Raleys Thank you to our members who use their Raleys Quality of Life and Save Mart SHARES cards when shopping. We truly appreciate your participation. On average we earn about $70 per month when these cards are swiped. This is a very simple way for CBS to raise additional funds. If you would like more information or need cards so that you can participate, please call Sandy in the Office. |
