Yom Hashoah

We had over 60 people from CBS and our Modesto Community attend the screening of Imaginary Witness:  Hollywood and the Holocaust and collected over $400 for the Yad Vashem Names recovery project to ensure no victim is forgotten.  This powerful film dealt with the way Hollywood responded to the War from the beginning through today and provoked good questions which came up directly following.  Having the local connection with the producer, Daniel Anker, who is Aggie Anker's grandson made it all the more special.  The DVD will be available for check-out by members.  Anyone who is interested call Laura Biewer.

CBS Jewish University Now In Session

OK, it's not really a university, but it is a place to study Jewish subjects in the curriculum of life, to learn together with your friends and fellow-community members, or just to be together, and we have eight offerings in the process of formation.

If you want to participate in any of the "courses" shown below, get out your directory and contact the coordinator by phone, email, postal mail, carrier pigeon, or however you want, but say loudly and clearly, "I want to be in your course."

From the Rabbi

Pesach arrived on schedule.  We had a wonderful community seder on the 2nd night. complete with a rousing chorus and fantastic animal sounds of Chad Gadya.  If I didn't get a chance to greet you personally, or you didn't get called on during the seder, my apologies, but it was quite a crowd and I couldn't see everybody.  Come to one of my classes and you'll get a personal greeting, and I promise to call on you if you want <grin>.

On another, and more serious, note, we will soon commemorate Yom HaShoah over the course of two evenings, Thursday May 1st and Friday, May 2nd.  On Thursday we are showing Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust.  This film was directed by Daniel Anker, grandson of our own beloved and remembered Aggie Anker. It will be followed by a stimulating discussion facilitated by Gary Phillips. Gary was a good friend of Aggie's and is a retired professor of film appreciation.  On Friday, we will commemorate Yom Hashoah, and those victims who are connected to our community, within our Erev Shabbat family service.  I hope to see you there.

Kol tuv,
Rabbi Art
